Dr. S.S.N. Perera earned his MSc in Mathematical Modelling and Numerical Methods in 2004 from ICTP/SISSA, Trieste, Italy, with research component on numerical analysis and computer simulation. Then he started joint doctoral research work at Technical University of Kaiserslautern in Germany under Prof. Thomas Goetz, a renowned mathematician in the fields of mathematical modelling, simulation and optimization. The doctoral work was mainly on optimal control and partial differential equations. After returning to University of Colombo, he established the Research & Development Centre for Mathematical Modelling in 2012 which offered many MPhil and PhD researches. The centre received several research grants with the mediation of Dr. S.S.N. Perera. He supervised researches affiliated to the centre in the areas of differential equations, mathematical modelling and numerical analysis. These researches carried were aimed at providing solutions to real problems in fields such as epidemiology, environmental sciences and polymer sciences. Currently while serving as the Director of the Modelling Centre, Dr. S.S.N. Perera continues to supervise multiple MPhil and PhD projects which are carried out under the Centre.
